SEW-EURODRIVE expands PxG servo lineup with economy series

SEW-EURODRIVE announced Monday the expansion of its PxG planetary servo gear unit portfolio with a new economy series designed for machine builders and OEMs.

The series includes three performance classes, P1.G, P2.G, and P3.G, for standard industrial automation applications. The gear units can be used for packaging equipment, carton erectors, material handling systems, gantry robots, assembly machinery, and machine tool portals.

The new range offers machine builders a lower-cost option for applications that don’t require the precision, torque capacity, or load capacity of the company’s existing PxG precision series. This range allows OEMs to select a gear unit based on the machine’s performance requirements without over-specifying the application.

“Every automation application has different performance requirements,” said Anecia Hoffield, servo product manager, at SEW-EURODRIVE, in a statement. “The PxG economy series gives machine builders more flexibility to select the performance their machines actually need while maintaining the quality, engineering support and long-term reliability they expect from SEW-EURODRIVE.”

Matching performance to the application

The P1.G is designed for standard applications with relatively low overhung loads. The P2.G provides additional load capacity for applications with increased radial forces.

The P3.G uses straight gearing with higher-capacity bearings for applications that require greater mechanical strength while remaining within project budgets.

SEW-EURODRIVE says the three performance levels are intended to help machine builders select the gear unit based on the mechanical demands of an application.

Expanding size and configuration options

The PxG economy series is available in five sizes with peak torque ratings ranging from 11 to 500 Nm. The gear units are offered in one- and two-stage configurations with rotational clearance from six to 12 arcminutes.

The series has a rated service life of more than 20,000 hours. Solid-shaft designs are available with smooth, keyed, or splined output options, depending on the performance class.

Food-grade lubrication options and multiple mounting interfaces are also available to support different machine designs.

Supporting machine design and selection

The economy series is integrated into SEW-EURODRIVE’s SEW-Workbench, DriveCAD, and DriveConfigurator engineering tools to help machine builders select and design drive systems.

The new range sits below the existing P5.G, P6.G, and P7.G precision series. Together, the economy and precision lines give OEMs the option to select different levels of performance within the same PxG platform as application requirements change.
