It was 50 years ago when the first beep of a barcode at Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio changed
the way brands, retailers, and consumers interacted. In three years, that will change again.
By the end of 2027, retailers will have to accept 2D barcodes on point-of-sale systems. This 2D barcode
— commonly known as a QR code — holds a lot of power in the form information on nutrition,
allergens, or sustainability initiatives, while also improving product traceability in the supply
chain.
Of course, industry standards are needed to ensure this works for all parties involved. GS1 US is
a not-for-profit information standards organization that is behind the 2D Digital Link for packaging
that made its debut in food and beverage last year on PepsiCo’s Starry lemon lime flavored soda.
For the beverage industry, smart packaging is a significant digital transformation.
On August 6, 2024 at 2:00 ET, GS1 US experts who have also spent time in the beverage industry as data and standards specialists, will have an interactive discussion about the technology and the impact on packaging in the food and beverage industry and beyond.
Speakers include: Liz Sertl, senior director of supply chain visibility at GS1 US, and Amber Walls, senior director of
global standards at GS1 US.
