Harpak-ULMA VFFS system simplifies cleaning, reduces utility use

Harpak-ULMA will showcase its VTC 840 WD, a vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) system, at Pack Expo International this fall.

Designed for high-sanitation food packaging applications, the machine offers full 360-degree IP66 washdown capability. It can be used for protein, poultry, cheese, frozen food, and other products.

The VTC 840 WD is also designed to reduce electrical and compressed-air consumption while simplifying setup and operation. Harpak-ULMA says the machine uses nearly 20% less electricity and more than 30% less compressed air.

“Processors have been told for years that better sanitation means more downtime and higher utility bills. We rejected that trade-off,” said Mike Marchand, senior product manager at Harpak-ULMA Packaging, in a statement. “The VTC 840 WD was a clean-sheet redesign so plants no longer have to choose between a machine they can clean aggressively and one that runs lean.”

Lower energy use and simpler cleaning

The system features an IP66-certified design that can withstand high-pressure washdown from all angles.

Harpak-ULMA redesigned the machine’s mechanical and pneumatic systems to reduce electrical and compressed-air consumption. The company also simplified the film path, reducing the number of reel rollers from 30 to five.

The machine includes ergonomic features designed to simplify operation and speed up changeovers.

Simplifying setup for operators

The VTC 840 WD uses barcode-driven recipe automation and can automatically adjust key machine parameters based on the selected recipe.

The VFFS system also features film tracking and zone-specific alarm visualization to help operators identify where issues are occurring on the machine.

Harpak-ULMA says these features can reduce operator dependency while improving setup repeatability and production consistency.

Operators can also monitor overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) and utility consumption in real time.
