Flexible plastic pouches projected to boom over the next decade

Consumer demand for flexible packaging is expected to create a surge in the industry over the next ten years. This demand will increase the need for flexible plastic pouches across the globe and propel the industry to grow from $198.46 billion in 2025 to $306.72 billion by 2034, according to a new report from global consulting firm Towards Packaging. The 4.45% increase over the next decade will be buoyed by significant growth in the North American market.

As e-commerce platforms expand, the demand for packaging that is cost-effective, lightweight, and durable increases. Other key factors influencing plastic pouch market growth include emerging segments such as adhesives, chemicals, and fertilizers, the addition of artificial intelligence (AI) for more efficient packaging, and stricter regulations on waste management and recycling, which may incentivize the use of flexible pouches with higher recyclability.

To date, flexible plastic pouches can be found across food and beverages, healthcare, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and personal care industries. The product is typically made from materials like polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene that provide flexibility, strength, and durability along with moisture and wear and tear resistance properties.

In addition, new advancements in barrier films, resealability, and consumer-friendly features (such as zip-locks, spouts, and easy-tear pouches) are driving the growth of plastic pouches. To that end, North America’s consumption of convenience foods, such as pre-packaged snacks and ready-to-drink beverages, are on the rise and contributing to the popularity of the plastic pouch.

Because these pouches are lightweight, they are more cost-effective and space-efficient when compared to rigid plastic packaging solutions, such as bottles or jars. The product can be manufactured in several shapes and sizes and can come standing up or lying flat. Flexible plastic pouches also provide enhanced protection for consumers and assist in protecting packaged goods from moisture, oxygen, and other contaminants. All of which reduce spoilage and extend the product’s shelf life.

The report explores additional packaging trends driving adoption. These include:

Online shopping: The ability for consumers to purchase items from anywhere in the world has propelled shoppers to buy more products from e-commerce platforms. The versatility of flexible plastic pouches accommodates a variety of products, including accessories and electronic devices to clothing. But specifically, flexible pouches reduce shipping costs and protect products, which makes it suitable for e-commerce packaging.

Sealing solutions: Stand-up pouches with zipper closures are currently being coveted within the food and beverages industry. The zipper feature brings an airtight seal to package goods, ensuring the product remains fresh. Additionally, the demand for convenient packaging has impacted the marketplace.

AI integration: To reduce waste and downtime, AI technologies are being implemented in the packaging manufacturing process. These technologies can also detect defects and streamline the entire production process.

The report also listed 24 key players in flexible plastic pouches, including Amcor, Mondi, Sonoco Products, Sealed Air, Printpack, and Westrock, and more.  To see the full report, click here.
